How to write searchable Pinterest pin descriptions

The key to Pinterest success rests on two things:

1. Compelling images and video to draw attention and encourage clicks

2. Effective keywords to enhance your SEO and drive discoverability

To achieve the second point it’s really important to be able to write key word packed searchable Pinterest Pin descriptions. If you’re not sure how then read on because I’m going to share tips and strategies to help you create descriptions that improve the discoverability of your content, engage your audience and encourage them to take action.

1.Understand Pinterest's search algorithm

Pinterest uses a series of sophisticated search algorithms to match user queries with relevant content. To optimise your Pin descriptions it's essential to understand how this algorithm works. Don’t worry, you don’t need to know the technical details of this (only Pinterest know how they work!), what you do need to know is that, in a nutshell, the Pinterest algorithm prioritises fresh, relevant and engaging content.

What does this mean? Avoid using the same description on multiple pins. Tweak the wording each time you pin so the algorithm doesn’t pick up duplicate copy. Equally don’t just dump a load of keywords in the description. This will be picked up as keyword stuffing meaning your content will be ranked lower in the search or not at all. Write in sentences but stick to the point. More on that later…

2. Focus on keyword research

This is the biggy and where I advise you to spend time and get it right. Just like with any search engine, keywords play a pivotal role in Pinterest's algorithm. You need to do thorough keyword research to identify the terms and phrases your target audience is likely to search for and weave  these keywords naturally into sentences in your Pin descriptions. This will increase the likelihood of your content appearing in relevant search results.

To do your keyword research use the Pinterest search bar to find popular and related keywords in your niche. Type in what your business does and record the search results and related search results that come back (a word doc or spreadsheet is just fine). You can also go and have a nosey around other people’s profiles and take inspo from the keywords they’re using.

For example type “small garden design” into the search bar and the following keywords and phrases are returned:

·        Simple garden design

·        Small garden ideas layout

·        Small garden ideas budget

·        Low maintenance

·        Ideas Layout backyards

·        Small garden design with shed

·        Modern small garden design

·        Landscaping ideas small garden

·        Front yards landscaping

Build up a bank of a mixture of niche, relevant to your business and generic keywords. These will form the basis of your pin descriptions, title etc.

3. Be descriptive and specific

When writing Pin descriptions be detailed and specific about the content of your Pin. Clearly explain what users can expect when they click on it. Consider the who, what, where, when, and why of your Pin, and convey this information in a concise and engaging manner.

For example if writing a description about beaded bracelets this description isn’t going to help you rank in the search because there are very few key words. It’s not very engaging either so probably won’t encourage people to click through to your website.

“Beaded signs of the zodiac bracelet. Personalisation available.”

However this description is packed full of key words in short sentences. It has passion and personality and is really engaging. You can feel the love and attention that’s gone into making the bracelet and want to find out more.

“These 18 cm beaded stretch bracelets feature delicate crystals and charms sourced from every corner of the globe and beads representing each astrological sign. Perfect for showcasing your personality and embracing your cosmic energy. Whether you're an adventurous Aries, a passionate Scorpio, or a creative Gemini, my bracelets make a perfect accessory or gift for any occasion. Explore my wide range of designs and find the perfect bracelet that resonates with your zodiac sign. Personalisation and gift wrapping are available on request.”

4. Keep it concise

While it's essential to provide enough information, keep your Pin descriptions concise and to the point. Users often scroll quickly through their Pinterest feeds, so capturing their attention with succinct yet informative descriptions is a great strategy. You get a 500 character limit so choose each word wisely.

5. Appeal to emotions

Pinterest users are using the platform to find inspiration and ideas. Appeal to their emotions by writing Pin descriptions that evoke a sense of curiosity, excitement, or desire. Connect with your audience on a personal level and make them feel compelled to explore your content further.

6. Include a call to action (CTA)

Encourage user engagement by incorporating a call to action in your Pin descriptions. This is where you get to tell them the exact action you want them to take now they’re on your pin and they like what they see. Whether it's inviting users to save, share, click or visit your website, an engaging CTA can boost interaction and extend the reach of your Pins.

 7. Test and analyse

Pinterest Analytics provides valuable insights into the performance of your Pins. Regularly analyse the data to understand which Pins are resonating with your audience and refine your content strategy based on the results.

Writing searchable Pinterest Pin descriptions is a powerful way to enhance the visibility and reach of your content. By understanding Pinterest's search algorithm, doing effective keyword research and crafting engaging and concise descriptions, you can optimise your Pins for maximum impact.

And remember! Pinterest board descriptions are an important part of your SEO strategy too. Use the advice in this blog when writing your board descriptions and add another layer of searchability.
