Pinterest SEO made simple

Pinterest is an amazing, creative place to showcase your products or services. Trust me, people are searching for absolutely everything on the platform.

An important thing to know then is that Pinterest is not a social media platform. It’s a huge search engine where pretty much everything you create and upload is searchable. Because of this, understanding Pinterest SEO is crucial.

In this blog, I’ll delve into the not so mysterious Pinterest SEO and provide actionable tips on how to optimise your content for more visibility and engagement.

Understanding Pinterest SEO

1. Keywords:

Pinterest SEO begins with keywords. Users discover content through searches. Strategic keyword placement increases the likelihood of your Pins appearing in those searches. Carry out a thorough keyword research for your business and integrate these keywords into your Pin descriptions, titles, board title and board names.

How?

Use the Pinterest search bar to find popular and related keywords in your niche. Type in what your business does and record the search results and related search results that come back (a word doc or spreadsheet is just fine). You can also go and have a nosey around other people’s profiles and take inspo from the keywords they’re using.

For example type “colourful jewellery” into the search bar and the following keywords and phrases are returned:

·        Colourful Jewellery Aesthetic

·        Colourful Earrings

·        Colourful Necklace

·        Funky Jewellery

·        Maximalist Jewellery

·        Multicolour Jewellery

·        Contemporary Jewellery Designs

·        Fun Jewellery

·        Bold Jewellery

·        Statement Earrings

·        Modern Jewellery Design

·        Extraordinary Jewellery

Build up a bank of a mixture of niche, relevant to your business and generic keywords. These will form the basis of your pin descriptions, title etc.

2. Optimise your profile:

Your Pinterest profile is a crucial part of Pinterest SEO. Ensure that your profile name, bio and board names include relevant keywords. Craft a compelling and informative bio that not only reflects your brand personality but also incorporates key terms associated with your business. Make it super clear what you do, who you do it for and what the end result is.

How?

Use my ‘How to Optimise Your Pinterest Profile’ guide which walks you through everything you need to know and do to make sure your profile is primed for Pinterest search.

3. Create high quality, relevant pins:

Pinterest's algorithm prioritises high quality and relevant content. Craft visually appealing Pins that align with the interests and needs of your target audience. Use clear and vibrant images, captivating headlines, and compelling descriptions to make your Pins stand out.

4. Consider using rich pins:

Rich Pins provide additional information directly on the Pin itself, enhancing the user experience and Pinterest SEO. Depending on your business type, consider using different types of Rich Pins, such as Product Pins, Article Pins or Recipe Pins. Rich Pins pull real time information from your website, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

How?

Follow Pinterest’s instructions on how to set up and maintain Rich Pins.

5. Check Pinterest analytics:

Pinterest provides analytics that offers insights into the performance of your Pins and boards. Monitor metrics such as impressions, clicks, and saves to understand what resonates with your audience. Use this data to refine your Pinterest SEO strategy over time by identifying top performing Pins and creating similar content to capitalise on your success.

How?

From the main Pinterest menu select Analytics ‘overview.’ There you’ll be able to see your overall performance, top pins and top boards. You can refine the data by date range, content type, metric and audience demographics.

6. Stay on top of trends:

Pinterest is a platform driven by trends and seasonal interests. Be aware of what’s going on on Pinterest and stay updated with the latest trends in your industry and incorporate them into your content strategy. Creating timely and relevant Pins can boost your visibility before and during peak search periods.

How?

Explore Pinterest's Trend Hub for insights into emerging trends. Here you can search for keywords trending on Pinterest and discover what’s currently trending in the UK. This data can be refined by your audience demographics: Interests, age and gender.
