Quick Pinterest win: Refresh your boards

If your Pinterest boards are feeling a little neglected, you’re not alone. It’s easy to set them up and forget about them especially when you’re focused on creating fresh content. But your boards are more than just a home for your Pins. They’re like the filing cabinets of your Pinterest account, organising your ideas, helping Pinterest understand what your content is about and most importantly, making it easier for potential customers to find you.

Giving your boards a quick refresh can help improve your visibility in search, polish up your profile and make sure your content is working harder for you. The best bit? It doesn’t take hours to do. Here’s how to give your boards a simple but powerful makeover.

1. Audit your existing boards

Start by scrolling through your profile and taking stock of what’s there. Do your boards still reflect your current brand, services or offers? Are there any you created in a rush, or ones that feel off topic now?

Ask yourself:

  • Does this board still make sense for my business?

  • Would a potential client understand what this board is about?

  • Is this board full of helpful, high quality Pins?

If the answer’s no, it might be time to update, merge or archive it.

2. Update board titles

Each board title is a little SEO opportunity. Instead of quirky or vague names, aim for clear, keyword rich titles that describe what’s inside. For example, “Inspo” might become “Small Business Instagram Post Ideas” or “Modern Coastal Interiors”.

Keep it simple and searchable. This helps Pinterest match your boards with people actively looking for your kind of content. ChatGPT is going to be your friend for this task!

3. Refresh board descriptions

Many people skip this step, but your board description helps Pinterest (and users) understand the board’s purpose. Use natural language, include a few relevant keywords and think about what someone might type in to find content like yours. This might not be how you describe your products or services but don’t be precious about this. Researching and using the right keywords is going to get your content in front of a lot more of the right people!

For example:

“A collection of modern rustic kitchen design ideas, from open shelving to natural wood finishes. Perfect for UK homeowners planning a kitchen renovation.”

4. Merge similar boards

If you’ve got multiple boards covering the same topic — maybe “Kitchen Ideas”, “Kitchen Pins”, and “Kitchen Design” — consider merging them into one strong, well-organised board. This stops your content from competing with itself and makes your profile cleaner and easier to navigate.

To merge, you’ll need to move all the Pins into the board you want to keep, then delete or archive the others. There’s a merge option when you click the three dots in the top right of your board page.

5. Archive or delete irrelevant boards

If you’ve got boards that are personal, off topic, or just no longer fit your brand (like that old “Wedding Ideas” board or “Kids Birthday Cakes” from five years ago), it’s OK to let them go. You can archive them (they’ll be hidden but not deleted) or remove them completely.

Keeping your account focused makes you appear more credible and helps Pinterest’s algorithm work in your favour.

6. Make board maintenance a habit

Like any filing system, your Pinterest boards work best when they’re kept tidy. A quick monthly or quarterly check in is enough to make sure everything’s still relevant, fresh and optimised. It doesn’t need to be another overwhelming task. Just pop it on your to do list every now and then and you’ll stay on top of it.

Refreshing your Pinterest boards is one of those small tasks that can have a big impact. By keeping things clear, focused and keyword friendly, you’ll help more people discover your content and that means more eyes on your offers, your blog posts or your products. So, go on, get tidying!
